The Ups and Downs to blogging

Reading about blogging and thinking about the pros and cons about using blogs as a collaborative tool in the classroom more for the upper grades then in my classroom.  I have mix feelings when it comes to using blogs in the classroom.   But just like all the new types of technologies and software that are being introduced to us teachers I am open to explore them.

I believe there are many great points to having and using a blog in the classroom as a project.  I think there are many times when kids sit in the classroom when they are feeling pressured to get writing done that sometimes I think it gives them writers block.  If students have the ability to sit down in the comfort of their own home maybe they would be able to open up more.  It would also make them more motivated to do their work because their work could be seen by others.

I also believe this could be a con to having their work opened to the public or to their parents/students to see that this could open them up to be scrutinized by others.  This could also make them not want to open up as much because they would be afraid to be honest with others reading on.

  1. Melanie,
I agree that some families can want to keep their communication private. I wonder if there is a system that combines the idea of blogging and keep things private between teacher and families. I wonder if students could have access to the class website like a weebly and they can each write their own section of the website for homework and so get the opportunity to write on their own time. This might be a great way to help motivate students to do their work.

    Best,
    Naomi
